We can’t change the fact that we are all aging. It’s a fact of life that most of us hate dealing with. It probably bothers us because we understand that not everything is under our control. And once we realise that, we must also confront our own mortality.

As people reach their 40s and 50s, they start to ask themselves what they’ve done so far and what will lie ahead. It’s more commonly known as a ‘mid-life crisis’. ‘Am I having a mid-life crisis?’ is a question many people fret about when they reach their middle years. This is the time when we tend to reflect on what we haven’t been, who we haven’t met and, in general, what we haven’t done.

These days, even people in their 20s and 30s have problems with the aging process. Many people at this stage of life experience what is known as ‘a quarter-life crisis’, when they worry about whether they have chosen the right career, if they are earning enough money, and wheather or not to get married and have children.

While some experts attribute these experiences to physical changes in the body, others say it’s more emotional. Whether it’s caused by realizing there are more years behind than there are ahead or by hormone levels shifting, these are still difficult stages in anyone’s life. Although not everyone will be affected, it’s not uncommon for both women and men to go through some kind of age-related crisis.

We all know the clichés about people impulsively quitting their jobs, buying red sports cars and trading in older spouses for younger and ‘newer’ partners. We also know how some people can fall into a period depression. But that doesn’t necessarily need to be the case. Mid-life doesn’t have to be a crisis, and nor does approaching your thirtieth birthday. These should be times to take stock and examine your life, to revisit old dreams and plan new ways to fulfill personal goals.
